Student Learning Objectives

  • Students will write a letter to a Freedom Summer/Civil Rights impactful person of choice commenting on their contribution to history and how it relates to present-day society.

  • Students will be tasked with searching topics surrounding Black Joy to understand that not all African American or Black history is only suffering.

  • With a well-rounded understanding of Black Joy and injustices against Black Americans, students will create another mind-map to show growth in understanding

  • As a final wrap-up activity, students will write one thing that they thought was the most meaningful or important about the lesson, and students can add it to the positive word wall (where students will have a chance to read other’s thoughts and comments).
