Note for Teachers: Please note that the unit plan is written for 4th graders. Much of the content on this site may seem "too old" for students, however, 4th graders are old enough to learn about civil rights struggles. They need your help as educators to create the schema surrounding it. It is by design that students are asked to explore the journey box on Day One with little to no context. It is to drive inquiry-based learning. It would be wise to choose some of the primary source documents (especially the legal documents) to review with your students in a whole group setting to address confusion and questions. By talking through the primary source content together, students will develop a stronger foundation for their schema on this subject.
