Student Learning Objectives

Students will consider the causes and effects of Freedom Summer and the passing of Civil Rights legislature in relation to present-day civil rights strides and concerns.

Students will identify patterns of unjust behaviors either within the school system (ex: bullying) or in the larger community.

Students will organize in small groups according to the unjust behavior they most want to address and small groups will come up with a solution or solutions to this behavior or problem.

Students in small groups will create some sort of physical representation of their problem and solution (advocacy poster, protest signs, script and short play, etc.).

Students in small groups will take turns leading short discussions based on their problems, solutions, and materials.

Consider what had to be sacrificed to make change in society. Consider also what methods leaders and figures in Freedom Summer and the Civil Rights movement took to create that change. Use this information to become a Change Agent in class.

The Civil Rights movement carries a lot of pain and suffering, but also a lot of celebration and joy! Research on your own something that features Black Joy (sources of happiness for Black people in the U.S.) Think about books that feature happy Black characters, movies, music, TV shows, etc. that CELEBRATES being Black in America! Add three sources to this portfolio (one source per slide)
